Enjoy this interview with Nichole Beattie, writer of this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, “Sick.” Nichole was fun, interesting, and open about what it’s like to be a part of the show. Find out exactly why Rick is so over Lori, whether the group had seen the prison before the season opener, what it’s like in the Walking Dead writers’ room, and a lot more.
As always if you’d like to leave us a message you can call us at (650) 485-DEAD or email us at brains@walkingdeadcast.com.

You asked all the important questions – now you have to get Glenn Mazarra on to answer the ones that are still unanswered. :)
I really enjoyed this. I’m definitely looking forward to more writer interviews!!
Very interesting conversation but I thought she might melt down when you asked for her zombie noise. Well done for getting it and her impression was still better than R.K.’s albeit his is classic.
Nichole’s zombie sound was better than half the cast. I still laugh every time I hear Lauren Cohan’s. Haha!
Hey Jason.
FANTASTIC interview. She sounded like a fun person to talk to and I ahve to be honest with you, I think I enjoy the interview of the people on the other side of the camera even more than the ones in front of it. Something about the whole process is infintely fascinating to me. I particularly enjoyed the confirmation that the group had not, in fact, seen the prison before, and the explanation that came with it. I think “Sick” was probably my favourite episode yet so let’s hope we hear more from her as a writer. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think you’d get a zombie noise out of her. I tip my chapeau to you sir.
I also thought it was totally adorable that she was a little afraid of the walker extras. :)
Professional pride? ;)
Yeah, that kind of reminded me of Sarah Wayne Callies.
Evan Reilly doesn’t want to be interviewed, btw :( Too shy. Hope to get Scott Gimple sometime down the road. Nichole implied that he knows our podcast and encouraged her to do the interview.
Oh, that’s a bummer. :( Maybe if Evan hears that Nichole (and, hopefully, Scott) made it out alive he will change his mind…
Loved hearing this! Great job, and I hope you’ll be able to get more of the writers or anybody who works on the show to talk to you guys some more.
I was glad she confirmed the reason Rick is put out with Lori. I have tried to explain it to someone who thinks he has become “heartless”, but was only giving what I thought was the reason, not really being sure until this interview. Lori was manipulative, and growing up around manipulative women, I learned that that is probably the best thing you can do to destroy a relationship. So much more so when the manipulation leads to the death of your former best friend. And so, Rick is done with being a tool. Good for him. Considering the circumstances, I think he’s still a friggin’ boyscout.
I still don’t think Lori was manipulative, nor do I think she purposely pitted the men against each other, but I realize that I am in the minority… It really broke my heart to see Rick trying his best in that moment on the bridge. Lori was not there for Rick in that very moment that he needed her, when he explained what went down between him and Shane. Although, I don’t blame her for her reaction, I think it has forever changed their relationship. I feel that Rick is making almost making the same mistake by not being there when Lori needs him. It’s a mistake that he’s going to deeply regret if something happens to her. I have to say that I really like Rick and Lori’s story this season – it’s hard to watch, but I find it tragically compelling.
You know… I never noticed that there was a comments section here…
I am enjoying the Rick/Lori interactions as well. Maybe enjoying isn’t the right word, but it feels much more natural and realistic than the portrayals in the last season. Maybe Lori wasn’t so much manipulative as she was frightened of the consequences of her actions. Seems like her pain is coming more from Rick’s disappointment in her than any anger on his part could elicit. I think we have to chock this up to stronger and more consistent (hopefully) writing this season… her behavior was all over the place last season which made it really really hard to care about her one way or the other. Like, “don’t you dare go out there”, followed by, “let me go out in my car and get you”. As for Rick no longer being a tool… yeah, I’m digging this new Rick, but I would be scared shitless being anywhere near him.
I definitely believe there will be regrets. To Lori’s credit, I do believe she’s trying to mend what went wrong, and he’s probably going to handle it in a way that’s going to result in regret before it’s over. I can’t really imagine myself handling things any better than either of them under the same circumstances- except for maybe her reaction at the end of S2. I don’t think it would have bothered me that my kid put down a walker, no matter who it was.
