Announcing Under the Comic Covers, the podcast!Posted by Jason

Introducing… Under the Comic Covers: The Best in Indie Comics!

The Walking Dead is getting a spinoff, so why not us? Karen and I are proud to announce that Gracie Lou and Mr. Blahg are leaving the nest and hosting UtCC as it’s own podcast! (Though thankfully they’ll still be sticking around the Dead ‘Cast for their weekly Comic Talk segments comparing the show to the book.)

The UtCC podcast will continue to cover issues of The Walking Dead as they’re published, but Mr. Blahg and Gracie Lou have been exploring the world of independent comics and have found a few choice favorites, and they want to share them with YOU.

As time goes on, things will shift, but to start, UtCC will cover these fantastic books:

For one day in rural central Wisconsin, the dead came back to life. Now it’s up to Officer Dana Cypress to deal with the media scrutiny, religious zealots, and government quarantine that has come with them. In a town where the living have to learn to deal with those who are supposed to be dead, Officer Cypress must solve a brutal murder, and everyone, alive or undead, is a suspect. This sell-out hit series is created by New York Times Bestselling author Tim Seeley and Eisner-winning artist Mike Norton.

When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe. From New York Times bestselling writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina) and critically acclaimed artist Fiona Staples (Mystery Society, North 40), Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.

Sex Criminals
Suzie’s just a regular gal with an irregular gift: when she has sex, she stops time. One day she meets Jon and it turns out he has the same ability. And sooner or later they get around to using their gifts to do what we’d ALL do: rob a couple banks. A bawdy and brazen sex comedy for comics begins here, by Matt Fraction (Satellite Sam, Hawkeye) and Chip Zdarsky (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops). Named one of Time Magazine’s top 10 graphic novels for 2013.

Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He’s been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases.

Manifest Destiny
In 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark set out on an expedition to explore the uncharted American frontier. This is the story of what they discovered lurking in the wilds… Skybound’s newest original series unveils the monsters of the western frontier in the adventure of a lifetime by writer CHRIS DINGESS (Being Human) and up-and-coming artist MATTHEW ROBERTS.

The Walking Dead
Some zombie thing.

If you’ve enjoyed what Mr. Blahg and Gracie Lou have been doing, we hope you’ll come along for this ride. We’re sure you can find something you like from the comics they’re covering, and maybe dip into one or two (or three or four) of them. And of course be sure to let ‘em know if there’s something else you’d like them to cover.

One last special announcement:
For the first episode of UtCC, dropping sometime next week (probably March 7 or 8), Mr. Blahg and Gracie Lou will be interviewing none other than the illustrator of The Walking Dead himself, Mr. Charlie Adlard! Actually the interview has already been recorded and they tell me it went terrifically, so check it out!

Stay tuned to the Walking Dead ‘Cast and we’ll let you know what that first episode is available in iTunes. In the meantime, here’s all the UtCC contact info:

P.S. In celebration of this launch, don’t forget to enter for your chance to win David S. E. Zapanta’s alternate reality zombie novel, Posthumous. Go to to learn more.
